NewJeans: Severe Penalty for Using iPhone During Inkigayo Performance by KCSC
NewJeans Controversy at Inkigayo
NewJeans ' performance on the music show Inkigayo , where the members filmed each other with iPhones, resulted in a formal sanction from the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC).
On the 6th, at its 30th plenary meeting, the KCSC announced a disciplinary measure of "warning" against SBS, which broadcast this performance of NewJeans on July 30, 2023. This warning is considered a serious sanction that may affect the future renewal of SBS's license.
During the performance, the members of NewJeans used iPhone 14 Pros, filming themselves for approximately 19 seconds.
Towards the end of the performance, member Minji held the iPhone while the group posed, staring at the phone's camera, displaying a video on the main screen. This staging is also present in the music video for ETA .
SBS explained: "Using a music video concept is a common performance technique, and the production team did not see it as a problem. They were very careful to avoid direct exposure of the phone."
SBS apologized for any confusion among viewers and pledged to strengthen internal controls. After the broadcast, the show's program director was replaced.
KCSC member Kang Kyung Pil noted, “It seems like the PD knew that an iPhone commercial would immediately follow the show, making it hard to believe that they didn’t consider the connection.” KCSC chairman Ryu Hee Rim added, “When a performance identical to the music video features a phone camera shot, it’s hard to avoid viewers’ perception of it as an advertisement.” The KCSC has ordered SBS to prevent similar incidents in the future.
